Social Media

The way in which most people consume any kind of content is through different social media platforms. In a broad sense, it a source of news, entertainment, memes and is the main way in which interpersonal connections are made. Along with the growing importance of social media to our interactions both personally and commercially, is the question of its effects on people. There is skepticism surrounding the emotional, social and even physical effects that the extensive reliance on social media has on people long term. This issue of course raises a polarizing question, is the use of social media negative and what does it do change or affirm our beliefs? In terms of social media and news, people tend to expose themselves to content and opinions that they agree with.

Reddit is often to be believed to be the underbelly of social media platforms, compared to Facebook and Twitter it is a place that is more open to content that might not be accepted on more mainstream sites. Though, it is interesting to point out that a lot of memes that are found on other sites are generated from Reddit so if one were to find a Facebook page that often posts this type of content it would be no surprise to know that it came from Reddit. Memes are a form of comedy and commentary that usually play on the irony of their subjects. Though they are very different, memes can be compared to the more traditional format of stand-up comedy. Both are ways of packaging and compressing current topics into relatable and easily consumable little packages. Comedians, whether their preferred form is stand-up or creating memes, are commentators. They observe what is going on around them and turn the situation around to generate humor from it.

Below are some examples that are considered the top posts from the popular subreddit r/dankchristianmemes, which serves the function that its title states. It is a place for people to post memes with specifically Christian content. The popularity of a post is based on the amount of upvotes they have. I've taken the three most upvoted posts of all time from the subreddit, as an example of the type of humor found there.

This is the top post of all time on r/dankchristianmemes. It is a gif showing a soccer player that represents Jesus sailing past different things that are typically considered off-limits in Christian culture. As opposed to making fun of these ideas, this gif shows the Jesus figure as successful and a hero.

This is the second most popular post of all time from the aforementioned subreddit. It is a verse from the Bible accompanied with a fairly popular meme format, a judgmental Winnie the Pooh. This meme references particularly sexual humor, which is often considered off-limits in religious contexts. Which explains why Pooh's reaction is one of disgust, it keeps in line with the typical moral schema in Christianity of keeping things that are sexuality suggestive far away.

This is the third most popular post of all time. This tweet is less about Christian culture and more about a humorous situation. The comedy here comes from the irony of Joseph being in a situation where things don't add up.It is also important to note that all three of these memes are presented in completely different formats, yet they all seem to accomplish the same end goal. They are all Christian memes, while at the same time make fun of Christianity.

The humor found on this subreddit is extremely complex, though the posts are indeed working in irony and are poking fun at Christianity, there is nothing malicious about it. Irony is certainly a large part of why these memes are popular, knowing that Christians typically keep themselves away from what may be considered sinful or tempting. Though these posts are Christian on the surface, meaning in the content they present, they are still aiming to poke fun at the opinions they seem to be supporting. Again, there is nothing inherently that seems to point at these posts as hurtful. In fact, one of the rules of the subreddit is to"respect others... yes, even if they are different than you. Do not come here and say things like 'hate the sin love the sinner' or any of the other stupid sayings people use when trying to use faith to justify hate. Alternatively, if you come here to insult religion, you will also be asked to leave". So the goal of this community is to provide a place where Christian memes can be posted, and which just about anyone could laugh at, without the religious argument that tends to come with them.
